Background on Our City and AssociationIrvine is a master planned community in Orange County, California, located just off the coast behind Newport Beach. The city was spawned from the old Irvine Ranch by The Irvine Company in the late 1960s. Our city has currently over 100000 residents and is a net exporter of jobs. North and south of the City lie very large industrial parks -The Airport and The Spectrum- which are home to many high technology firms. We are home to the University of California at Irvine and Saddleback College.
Overall we have one of the best school systems in the State of California, a highly educated population, low crime, mild weather without the fog that shrouds Newport Beach, a modern infrastructure and are second only to the San Jose area when in high technology jobs.
The city is comprised of many self supported villages. Each village includes the supporting infrasctucture to provide for the daily and weekly needs of the residents. Shops, gas stations, restaurants and even liquor (of the high falutin' type) stores are located within the villages in a low key developments. Linking the villages are arterial roads which crisscross the city and allow fairly high speed limits (60 mph on Culver). In essence, getting around Irvine is pretty easy, although the main freeways crossing the city (the San Diego and Santa Ana Freeways) become virtual parking lots during rush hour.
The Broadmoor development in the Turtle Rock Area of Irvine is one of the oldest in our city. University Park and Turtle Rock villages were begun in 1967 before the city had been incorporated. The Broadmoor lies just south of UCI, west of the San Diego Freeway (I405) and south east of Corona Del Mar. Our weather is very mild because of our close proximity to the ocean, but because of the low hills behind us and the coast we don't get socked with fog as much as the folks in Newport Beach.
Our politics have been pretty crazy for Orange County: Larry Agran was
for a while the Democratic Mayor of our heavily republican city, but other
than Larry's agenda, the residents of Irvine are pretty mellow. Our
political scene turned interesting recently when the Navy closed El Toro
NAS. Evil Forces (!)
want to convert it into an International Airport so they can close
John
Wayne Airport. Newport Beach -the main proponent- and Irvine
-the main opponent-
are locked in a prolonged legal battle which ought to keep our many local
attorneys happy for years to come. Good Luck seeing even a commercial
Cesna taking off Irvine International before 2010.
Irvine is blessed with the availability of cheap fat pipes to the Internet
via cable modems courtesy of
Cox
Cable and high speed digital service (ISDN and DSL) courtesy of Pacific
Bell . We are also endowed with a population with far above average
education and income. Just down the street from the Broadmoor stands
the University of California at Irvine
from which many of our members derive benefits and employment. Hence
it makes sense for us to use our ready access to the Internet and understanding
of the capabilities of internetworking to bypass 17th century rules of
representative government models and push towards a more democratic system
based upon soon to be commonplace personal intercommunication and pervasive
computing. Our community incorporation makes a perfect testing ground
for politics at the local level carried out over the Internet, just as
our local police department
is using the internet to provide a city wide forum dealings with matters
of traffic and security.
This page serves the membership of our community by providing easy access to our Board of Directors, establishing an on line neighboor resolution system and a on line forum for our membership to discuss whatever issues may arise.
This page is provided by a member of the association, entirely at his own cost and time on a volunteer basis. Other volunteers are welcomed. The webmaster and sponsor has long experience in software development and internetworking but has a mortgage which prevents full term philantropy.
Many of you may be aware of the extremely bitter election that we just had in November 1999 where our community's politics reached an all time low. In fact, this web page has its origins as a reaction to the level of miscommunication that the board lowered itself to in order to get reelected. This web page is meant to ensure that never again will a Board in power be allowed to control communication and ignore valid criticism. We will do this providing unbiassed reporting of the news about the community and direct democratic forums for the membership.
This page is independent of the Board and is meant to provide an unbiased, complete coverage of our association without the censorship and agendas promoted by Board Directors concerned about their reelection.
Some simple rules are required in order for this page to rise above the petty politics of the current Board and any other board that may arise.
1. This is a non partisan page. Editing control will be maintained to ensure that discussions are kept clean and free of innuendo and name calling.
2. No anonymous submittals will be admitted.
3. No ad-hominem attacks will be allowed.
4. Only members of the Association will be allowed to participate in the discussion. This is the reason why some of the message board must be moderated.
